Hewlett's Hideaway

Hewlett's Hideaway

Whangārei

Hewlett's Hideaway is located on Hewlett Point in the Whangārei Harbour, 2.5 hours drive from Auckland, and 30 minutes from Whangārei.

Hewlett's Hideaway was the original barn built by the first farmer to settle the land. It's been lovingly renovated by the owners to create a stylish open-plan living/kitchen/dining space - and an upstairs loft bedroom accessed via a spiral staircase.

The barn sits next to the farm's woolshed and sheepyards. It's a peaceful location, with beautiful views over farmland and the Whangārei harbour. Tidal flats surround the farm, so there is a variety of wading birds feeding at low tide and roosting off the point at high tide. You'll also see native birds such as fantails and tuis and plenty of farm animals including sheep, cattle, pet pigs, ducks and hens.

Starry nights are beautiful and the fire pit outside the barn is the ideal place to star-gaze and reconnect. The spectacular limestone rocks at the harbour's edge are a fabulous place for children to explore and swim at high tide.

A stay at Hewlett's Hideaway is a gentle introduction to a Kiwi farming life. The touches of early settler history on and around the farm and stunning, waterside location make for a really special and memorable experience.

Hewlett's Hideaway is self-catering. Just bring your own food and drink, and cook meals using the 'cube' manuka fired barbeque and electric hotplate provided in your kitchen. You'll find all the cutlery, crockery, pots and pans that you'll need.

If you want a break from cooking, Whangarei is just a 30-minute drive away and has lots of good cafes and restaurants. The Quay by the Whangarei Town Basin and 'No. 8' which is opposite - both recommended by your hosts!

If you need to stock up on supplies, you'll find supermarkets in Whangarei, a 30-minute drive away.

  • Things to do

Hewlett's Hideaway is a really unique farm-stay. Relax at the barn or get out and about on the property to visit the many farm animals.

Bring your walking shoes and explore the farm on foot, or explore the harbour! Your hosts have two kayaks for guest use - and there is great swimming at high tide. Kids will love climbing through and over the strange limestone rocks and trees by the water's edge...

If you're keen to get out and about the Waipu Caves are 20-minutes drive away - with stalagmites, stalactites and glow worms. Beautiful, white-sand beach, Ruakākā Beach is 20-minutes drive away.

  • Your Hosts

Chris and Sarah, along with their young sons Noah and Jasper are the sixth and seventh generations of the Hewlett family to live on their farm at Hewlett Point.

Passionate about their land, and on a mission to manage it sustainably, they have embraced regenerative agriculture – and are working hard at looking after the soil and planting trees.

Along with their main flock of sheep, they have a flock of coloured Gotlands and between them create some beautiful products from their wool.

Chris has a hospitality background and is a qualified chef.  More recently he has become a passionate sourdough baker. Whereas Sarah's history involves being a clothing designer. The couple still loves to create – the farm is now their canvas.  Noah and Jasper enjoy making balms from farm-grown ingredients such as kawakawa and olive oil.

Hewlett’s Hideaway is a perfectly preserved part of New Zealand history. Not only did we spend our evenings listening to the farm sounds over our crackling fire, toasting marshmallows, and drinking wine, but we also woke up to the sunrise over the water, perfectly illuminating the fields, trees, and limestone that are sprinkled across the farm. The carefully curated story of the family history that is on display at the accommodation is perfectly intertwined with modern fittings and fixtures to give you every convenience that you need to relax.
