Mahoe Cabin

Mahoe Cabin

Waikato

Mahoe Cabin is located in the Waikato, 17 minutes from Morrinsville, 1 hour and 35 minutes from Auckland City, or 35 minutes from Hamilton City.

It's set on a 27 acre protected bush block, complete with wetlands, and beautiful native trees including Kauri, Manuka, Totara, Ribbonwood, Titoki - and many other species of trees in various forms of maturity.

The cabin consists of a fully enclosed bedroom with a simple but lovely interior. Nordic spruce lines the walls and beautiful natural linens and fibres adorn the bed.

Directly outside the bedroom is an outdoor living and kitchen area. An outdoor fire with a mini bread/pizza oven is the perfect place to sit in the evening and watch the birds flitting through the wetlands. The spacious bathroom is next to the bedroom and accessed via the deck.

Mahoe Cabin is the ideal way to escape the hustle and bustle of city life and get a much-needed dose of nature. Native frogs and freshwater crayfish live in the various streams and wetlands on the property. Tui, fantails and Moreporks are regular visitors. Tucked into this peaceful and secluded spot, your everyday worries will seem far away...

  • Things to do

With board games, a selection of books, an outdoor fireplace and an outdoor bath, you'll find plenty to keep you entertained at Mahoe Cabin. Enjoy a bushwalk around the property, or sit back and watch the native birds flit through the bush and wetland.

If you want to get out and about though, there's plenty to do in the area. Woodland Historic Estate (14 minutes away) is a unique and very beautiful Historic New Zealand Homestead and Garden Estate established in the 1870s. Enjoy a wander around the stunning gardens or grab a bite to eat at Garden Grove - the onsite cafe.

  • Your hosts

Your hosts at Mahoe Cabin are Ron, Jax, teenage son Tristan and 2 German shepherds Winston & Misha.

Ron and Jax have owned and lived on the property since 2014. They bought the property purely to support and continue to regenerate the bush that covers it. They plant 200-300 native trees a year on their land. The wetlands mean that the protected bush block is a significant natural feature. Since moving in and restoring the ponds, they are delighted that native frogs and crayfish have returned, along with a substantial increase in the native birdlife.

Jax and Ron love living in this part of the world. Tauhei is a tiny village with a school and hall, and even though it is close to towns and cities, the dramatic hills and bush surrounds make it feel secluded and remote.

Jax works as an advisor for ACC and Ron is a director of Electrify.NZ, a specialist electric bike store, which he founded with his best friend in 2015. They are now nationwide with 11 stores across the country.

Both Jax and Ron are nature enthusiasts, with Jax a self-confessed glamper rather than a camper... Mahoe Cabin is a result of their love of immersing themselves in nature but still having those home comforts.

Mahoe Cabin is named for the native mahoe tree which surrounds the cabin.

Amazing retreat to relax and unwind. All the benefits of being in nature and experiencing the outdoors without having to set up a tent. The outdoor bath was amazing, and I so enjoyed sitting on a beanbag reading a book by the fire in the late afternoon. Very peaceful.

My wife and I had an amazing weekend at Mahoe Cabin. It is so well-distributed, so cosy, so quiet – the best place if you want to relax and disconnect yourself from the world. Perfect for a couple. The marshmallows provided were a nice touch. I really enjoyed our stay.

This cabin was an absolute dream! It was super private, clean and so cute! So many bird songs during the day from the surrounding bush and beautiful songs of the ruru at night. Jax and whanau were very communicative and super lovely to deal with. I would love to book and stay again some time soon. We loved being out here.

Amazing was how I would describe our stay at the Mahoe Cabin. Waking up to the sound of the birds, being surrounded by bush, and having a hot bath out on the deck was just pure bliss. We couldn't have asked for a more refreshing stay.

Totally recommend this escape and we will absolutely book again. We were warmly greeted by our hosts days before our stay, given precise instructions and they even offered to leave some lights on in the cabin as we will arrive late. The weather was not very nice during our stay and the hosts provided two extra complimentary bags of firewood to keep cosy on the deck. The location is so beautiful and peaceful, and we had an amazing stay. Everything was super clean and you must have some pizza from the pizza oven, it was so delicious. We have absolutely nothing to complain about.
